Creating a Delightful Experience: Test Administration Strategies to Reduce Test Anxiety
-
The importance of standardized test administration procedures is undisputed in supporting validity. There is a tension, though, between strict standardized practices and the experience of test-takers. That is, the same administration practices that can support and increase validity can also amplify construct-irrelevant variance resulting from test anxiety. Finding a middle ground—or as Standard 5.3 puts it, “furnish reasonable comfort with minimal distractions”— helps balance validity with examinee comfort and reduce construct-irrelevant variance.
In this session, we will explore how two organizations (one university and one certification program) have implemented measures to make the testing experience as comfortable, low-stress, and delightful as possible. Each will share their approach to creating a more inclusive and accessible experience that helps better prepare test takers for the experience and reduce test anxiety while maintaining the integrity of the assessment process. Topics covered will include resources available to prepare for the testing experience, language used, and features available for use during the testing experience itself.
