Enhancing SME Performance: Best Practices from I/O Psychology
-
Managing SMEs is hard, but effective performance management of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) is crucial for the creation and maintenance of high-quality exams. This session brings together seasoned industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists to share an overview of the literature on work performance and then suggest best practices for optimizing SME performance for exam-related tasks such as item writing.
We will start with a 10-minute overview of foundational principles and key findings in work performance from over a century of industrial psychology. Next, we will discuss best practices for managing SMEs, including setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and fostering professional development. We will address common challenges and offer practical solutions based on current research and industry standards. Following this, two experienced I/O psychologists will provide commentary, sharing practical applications and insights. The session will conclude with prepared questions and audience participation.
Participants can expect to gain valuable knowledge about what I/O psychologists know about work performance and actionable strategies for measuring and improving SME performance, ensuring the quality of your exams, and ultimately, supporting the success of your testing programs.
