As a health professions educator, I am passionate about researching and implementing best practices for educating and assessing the clinical competency of learners with the overall goal of improving patient care. I am a leading expert in the use of standardized participants (SPs) in healthcare simulation. SPs are laypersons trained to serve in the role of patient, family, or healthcare team member. My research focus has been on communication and clinical skills, cultural humility, and interprofessional education.
